Mission StatementThe people from Southern Sudan have come to the United States not only to find a better place to live, but to become contributing members of her society. Many Sudanese arrive in the United States with very little knowledge of English, and they need to develop some command of the language, first to survive and then to establish a foundation that will enable them to further their education in America. Some Sudanese have never seen a flushing toilet, running water or a dollar bill. They are unfamiliar with where to go for public assistance; how to use public transit; how to use a telephone; where to go to find housing, a job, or food; and how to keep themselves warm in cold temperatures. Many are dealing with those left behind in their country or as refugees in other African countries, as well as the loss of friends, family members and their country. They are unfamiliar with the American way of life, miss their own culture, food and fellowship. The mission of the SSCW is to provide assistance that will enable the young men and women from Southern Sudan residing in Washington State to accomplish a smooth transition from their country to the United States, as well as to accomplish their goals of self-sufficiency. SSCW is a service organization formed to improve the opportunities and education of the Southern Sudanese community in Washington State, to encourage them, to assist them when they encounter problems, and help them adapt to life in the United States. SSCW serves the Southern Sudanese community throughout Washington State, with a primary focus in South King County areas of Tukwila and Kent where the majority of Southern Sudanese have settled.
