African Assistance Project

To build and operate a primary learning center in Bentiu, Sudan.

Need:
One of the greatest needs of Southern Sudanese communities is to provide elementary education to their youth, many of who have been orphaned. Communities across Southern Sudan have lost their schools, educators, and teaching supplies to continuous warfare. Southern Sudan has been ravaged by over 40 years of civil war, with 4.5 million dead and 9 million refugees, making it one of the worst humanitarian disasters in history. Southern Sudan has the lowest school access rates in the world, and 90% illiteracy among women and girls.

In addition, villagers have been systematically denied education by the government. Among the adult population, 48 percent have no formal education, while only eight percent have finished high school. Without an educated population, the Southern Sudanese will be unable to rebuild their society.
