Youth Activities

The objective of this program is to enable children and young adults to participate in activitiess that will help enrich their lives, give them a sense of achievement, and contribute to their self-confidence and self-esteem. The Youth Activities Program consists of sports, recreation, social and other activities appealing to the children and young adults in the Community. Volunteers organize the activities and help the children and young adults participate.

Family Assistance

The objective of this program is to assist members of the Community take their first step toward economic self-sufficiency and to provide assistance in resolving problems resulting from relocation to the United States.

Counselors and volunteers from the community are available to assist individuals and families resolve problems by assisting them with:

  1. Welfare and refugee assistance
  2. Child care
  3. Problem solving needed to deal with a given situation

Orientation to America

Objectives for this program are:

  1. To provide instruction on how to deal with every day needs, including housing, transportation, communication, food, banking, health care, and schooling.
  2. To provide training and support services to help Southern Sudanese people deal with differing cultural expectations while preserving family values & culture.
  3. To increase understanding and knowledge about community support networks for refugees and immigrants.

Speakers conduct sessions for people who have recently arrived in the United States to assist them in settling and in taking their first steps toward self-sufficiency.

Education Services

The Education Services program is designed to meet the following objectives:

  1. Provide knowledge of English as a second language such that the Southern Sudanese people can effectively communicate and function within the community.
  2. Teach students how to access available services, increase academic achievement, reduce lingual-cultural barriers, develop healthy relationships with parents, teachers, and peers, and successfully advocate for their needs.
  3. Help youth develop leadership skills, problem solving skills, and a sense of community responsibility.
  4. Assist adults who are too old to attend high school but lack a high school education to receive that education.
